Laxness is almost an exception in that he was the only person (to my knowledge) to carry that particular family name, and Halldór is a common name so it's very easy to refer to him as Laxness (although "Kiljan" is just as popular). When he was alive Icelanders wouldn't just call him "Laxness" when addressing him though.
